No Doubt
Return of Saturn - Interscope

Hmm..Mike the editor is having a laugh methinks. Not only do I get the slab of banality that is the current No Doubt single to review but I am also blessed with the L.P. from whence it is lifted. It lives on here with 13 of its ilk. Most of them are that peculiar bastardisation of Ska and College Rock which Americans seem to guzzle like a fly guzzles sh*t. There are, of course, the token slowies. One of these will doubtless be the second single to demonstrate to the, yawn, diversity of the bands output. I can't find words to express my dismay at having to listen to this just to tell you not to bother listening to it. As I mentioned in my in-depth review of the single ("Ex-Girlfriend"), Gwen Stefani's boyfriend is Gavin Rossdale from Bush. What I omitted to mention was the dreadful possibility that they may one day take it upon themselves to breed. Imagine, if you will, a world in which a Stefani-Rossdale hybrid exists. A world in which the music scene is dominated by a horrible sub-grunge-ska-rock type noise topped off with a voice that manages to combine the bellowing of an angst-ridden buffalo with the screeching wails of the witch as she melts at the end of the Wizard of Oz. This unnerving vision will become a reality if we allow No Doubt and Bush to continue plying their vile trade. I urge you all to take immediate action by boycotting this record. Do it for your children's sakes.
